Safe in the Arms of Jesus

I know that feeling. It was the middle of the night. The very dark, long, hard, part. Sometime along in my hospital stay, I had learned that the hardest, deepest, darkest, longest, part of night was around two or three. And I was there. I had been in the hospital for over a week following a traumatic motor vehicle accident. I had multiple rib fractures, internal organ damage and had suffered significant blood loss. But, I was pulling through. Two days ago, I had been told I could go home today, but they changed their mind and I had to stay for another procedure.

I had begged the doctor “Please, let me go home, I’ll come back tomorrow.” But even as his kind blue eyes looked down at me I knew he was not going to let me. “At least don’t make that horrible nurse Ann take care of me then.” He had promised that although I did need to stay another night, he could make sure that nurse was not assigned to me again. So tonight here I was in a new room. Dad was beside me sleeping in a chair.

My pain was crushing, even with the twelve ice packs melting around my torso. They had given me the pain pills and now I just had to wait. Wait for what? I was exhausted, had been all night but couldn’t sleep. I was miserable in more pain than I’d even known to dread. I ached, I was exhausted, I was discouraged, I had hot tears filling my eyes and I felt so alone. “Dad?” I called. I tried to move my hand out under the bed rail to reach his. But I was too tired to move it. It hurt too much to stretch it out. I couldn’t even touch my Dad. “Dad” I called again, but this time even weaker and quieter as the loneliness and pain chocked my throat with tears. I can’t even reach my Dad. I thought with panic. And the pain got worse. The loneliness locked me in my bed under the dreadful white sheets and ice packs.

I was so tired I could hardly cry, but then I felt His arms. There in the room, where I felt all alone and discouraged. There in the room where the pain was so heavy I could hardly move a muscle. There in my room He came and held me safe in His arms. I never remember feeling Jesus like I did that night. And sometimes, like today, when the tears come because my body won’t do what I want it to, I think of the dark long hard part of the night, when Jesus came and held me. And I know that no matter what I am always safe in the arms of Jesus, safe on His gentle breast, there by His love o’re shadowed, safely my soul doth rest.

One Year Ago Today

Josh asked me to be his girlfriend.
We've learned a lot, laughed a lot, and had a lot of fun.

I don't like girl's blogs that just brag about their guys, but I'm going to do it anyway.
Last Saturday, I had some disappointing news (I'm not in nursing clinical rotation until January of 2016.) I worked Monday morning, went and talked with the nursing secretary at school and confirmed my "un-registered" status then had classes all day. I got home right before dinner and was tired and discouraged. Josh came to our house after he got out of work, and he brought a rose and chocolates for me!

I think this pictures says "Watch out world, Betsy and Josh have teamed up."

Homework

My government teacher gave us a semester long paper.
We turned it in chunk by chunk. Now I have to complete that last chunk, and if I turn the whole thing in better than the pieces before, I have the chance of receiving more points than before. He showed us the best paper he ever graded. It was forty pages about Mongolia. My paper is about Zambia, and there is no way it will be forty pages long. I'm thinking I might be able to manage about 10 or 12 pages. The next couple of days will tell how much I can stretch out of my three drafts.

Logan's First Deer (both of them!)

This is my story of Logan's first deer.

Last night, I was ironing upstairs and heard his gun pop. I ran to the window and saw two deer come racing across the field. One of them slowed, stopped, and then toppled over. "He got one!" I yelled and ran downstairs. The rest of the household ran to the windows while I ran out the door.

Just as I was coming up to the quonset (which is the area he has been hunting from) I heard another pop. "What are you doing?" I asked. "You already got one." He looked a little disgusted at his gun and said, "The sights must be off. I know I was in the right spot."

I looked at him quizzically, "What are you talking about? There is a dead deer lying out in the field, I saw it fall."

He didn't believe me, but followed me over to the next field. Even when I pointed it out, he still didn't believe it. The white belly and brown hide just blended in with the clumpy, dirty, snowy field. As we walked up to it he still wasn't sure it was all the way dead. But once he saw the wound, I think he patted his gun. His shot was right above the shoulder. Exactly where he wanted it! The deer was absolutely dead.

So we tagged that deer and hauled it up to the house. As we were gutting it, he thought maybe he should see if he got that second deer. Apparently, while I watched the one fall, he watched another that ran the opposite direction. When it got to our east fence row, it hesitated. Logan shot, and the deer took off.

We got Logan's deer all gutted, and I was in the house rinsing the heart and liver when my cell phone rang. It was Logan, he was standing next to another dead deer.

So I went back out and helped him move deer one over to the barn rafter. Then we hung up deer two and gutted her.
It was my job to cut out the "pooper."

I had great fun. I always enjoy the gutting of animals. It is so fascinating to me. And it was so exhilarating to be a part of Logan's first deer, both of them.

Logan's first deer!

He only got two of the three deer, but then again, he only shot twice. So maybe we have a Nelson sharp shooter in the family?

Artwork

It is so much fun to be an Aunt!
When I was out with Kaelyn, Nessa and Austin last weekend, I acquired new stories, this beautiful artwork and a cold. I'd say it was a successful visit!

New Skill

proof

I recently completed the Michigan hunter safety education.
It entailed several hours of online study and testing as well as in classroom study and testing.
It turns out that even though I can pass the class with 100% accuracy, I still might miss a target 30 yards away!
Needless to say, my brothers (and fiancé) have had a few smiles on my behalf.
Oh well. The main reason I wanted to take the class was so that I understood guns better and was able to handle them safely.
If I happen to be able to shoot an animal and feed myself someday...that would be a bonus!

If you know me, you know how many pictures I ruined by laughing at trying to pose like this!

Weekend

Saturday, Josh and I went over to Scotville. While he played in a disc golf tournament, Lydia and I walked along Lake Michigan and enjoyed the lovely autumn day.

Lake Michigan. Its beauty always impresses me. Every visit is unique.

I enjoyed seeing the colorful trees the whole drive!

Josh Staple, Tim Vandezande, Brittany Staple, Me, Lydia Vandzande
(Josh Reames behind my camera)
Sunday afternoon a few of us went and tramped through the lovely acreage called Flip City. The Joshes (how do you say Josh plural?) had a good time throwing discs, Tim and Brit had fun being Tim and Brit, and Lydia and I enjoyed the rocks and trees. At the end of the afternoon I was able to convince most everybody to begrudgingly pose for this picture.

Grandpa Raspberries

My Grandma used to grow raspberries. The amazing wonderful juicy ones. The kind that I call Grandma raspberries.
All raspberries are good, but the shelf stable pink ones, leave something to be desired.

Mom has been going about once a week and buying a Grandpa's raspberries. They are so delicious. The kind that if you leave them on the table overnight, they are sqaushy and moldy the next day. And that is another qualifier for Grandma raspberries. So fantastic that they have to be eaten right away.

For Sunday dinner last week we had Grandpa raspberries made into a sauce and served over a yummy vanilla cake. Oh la la.

Zip Line

At our annual Lazy-T church camp I got to do something new. For the first time ever, I got to ride a zip line. Over the years Mr. Tom has told us of his dreams for huge teepees, obstacle courses, new driving horses, and most recently his dream to install a zip line down the hill and across the pond. This year he called and said it was all ready.

Mr. Tom hooking up Rebekah's pulley system.

Coming in for landing. So exhilarating!
It sort of reminded me of jumping out of the hay mow. Just no Brian to dare me.

The people on the ground seemed to have about as much fun as the people on the line.
The two best adventurers were Abigail and Kathryn. Kathryn made one long beautiful scream the whole way down. Only possible by someone who has taken as many voice lessons as she has. Abigail cried at the top deck until we practically pushed her off. Then she was petrified into silent fear until she reached the opposite shore. After her Dad grabbed her and picked her off the line, she let out a huge wail. By the time the next set of people was preparing to go again, she wanted to go too!

Fall

It's officially fall on our porch.
Dad's pears are all laid out, and Mom has been collecting garden/orchard goods all week.
Naomi is doing a great job and labeling and organizing the whole thing.

Apple Pies Today

When I got home from work today, Mom and I started making pies.

14 big ones
8 little ones (1 blueberry for Dan)

Naomi and I have been scared to go back to market without a pie.
Dan, one of Julie's preferred vendors, has been missing her homemade goodies. She always seemed to have something to share with Dan the lettuce man. Now that his wife has passed away, I think his well developed sweet tooth really is harder to over-sweetinize.
I hope he'll be happy that Naomi and I at least tried to live up to Julie's good name.

SPICE

A quick review to see what I'm doing in the areas of SPICE.

Spiritual

I've been helping out with Compass our young adult Bible study. Every other week we study a topic. I make out these blank sheets so everybody can take notes, and then I bring mine home and fill it out. That way if anybody wasn't there, they can still see what we studied.

Physical

We've been trying to learn how to play volley ball better. Unfortunately I hurt my foot, so I've been out of practice the last few rounds.

Intellectual

I start my next set of college course on Monday. I'm dreading them, but trying to be glad I only have ten credits!

Creative

I really can't take credit for it, it was Mom's idea. I made this blueberry flag to put up at our market stand. That way people can look from the parking lot and know that we are there. I knew that old tent pole I was saving would be good for something. :)

Emotional

This summer has been a learning time for Josh and I and our families. I'm so glad that God brought Josh into my life and is helping us learn together how to be His instruments.

This post was inspired by Julie.

Not Fishing

Last week Josh and I went fishing, but not for fish.

One of the sports Josh has introduced me to is disc golf. You have flat frisbees that you throw into metal baskets (called pins.) The basic idea is to get your disc into the basket (called a hole) in three (or fewer) throws. The theory of the game is simple. The learning of it is not. As you can imagine, my normal is about six throws to Josh's three!

Anyway, all that to say discs are important to Josh. When I was kayaking near the Midland course I found a disc that is old and rare. According to e-bay similar discs have been sold for $50 to $150 dollars!

After making that discovery Josh has been excited to go kayaking with me. It really turned more into a fishing excursion, but still it was kayaks in water. That made it fun for me.

We have only found one other disc so far. It still had its $7.99 price tag on it. But I think we’ll keep fishing.

Oh. Amy says that picking water lilies is against the rules. Something about them being endangered. Please don't turn me in. I was in blissful ignorance when I picked these fun flowers.

Skittle Jello

One of my favorite things to make for holiday meals, is this jello. Some people call it ribbon Jello, but it really tastes like a handful of Skittles.

You take at least six little boxes of Jello.

Make one box and split it in half. With one half add 1/3 cup of sour cream.
The other half add a couple of tablespoons of cold water.

Layer in the sour cream layer first and let it set.
Then add the plain layer. Continue the pattern to the top of the pan.

Cut it into squares and carefully scoop it out.

The colorful look is great for almost any table.

Un-grumpy

While Kaelyn was visiting she made me this balloon person.
She said it would help me, so that when I got home from work, I wouldn't feel grumpy.

She was right, it helps!

Grandma Reames

One super cool thing about Josh is his family.
He has sisters who dote on him, parents who love him,
and grandparents who spoil him.
It has been seven years since I had grandparents.
But now I get to share Josh's.

Garage Sale Find

Yesterday morning, we biked over to the neighbor’s estate sale. There was  a beautiful tea cup that I saw, but almost didn’t get. I almost left it there because I didn’t want to write it down.

Josh and I are taking a financial counseling class, and anything we earn or spend this month, we have to record.

And I wasn’t sure I wanted to defend a tea cup purchase on my list. But I did it anyway.
Do you think it was worth the four dollars?

Hand Quilting

Detail on the back of the quilt

I still don't quilt very straight, but the more I practice the better I become.
